In this presentation from an 'Advances in Environmental Analysis eSeminar' hosted by Separation Science in collaboration with Bruker, Ed George provides some tips on how to raise confidence in the analysis of environmental samples with tandem mass spectrometry.
Overview
This presentation discusses the process and power of multiple reaction monitoring (MRM) looking at the key applications for tandem MS in environmental monitoring, which are:
- pyrethroid insecticides by EI and NCI with tandem mass spectrometry
- PBDE flame retardants in sewage and ocean sediments
- EPA Methods 8270 and 525: raising confidence in results with MRM analysis of PCPPs by LC/MS/MS.
By viewing this presentation you will learn about:
- the power of Multiple Reaction Monitoring (MRM) in environmental samples
- how it can reduce detection/reporting limits and provide more confidence in your data
- how it enables matrix discrimination in samples against isobaric interferences that will occur with SIM alone
- how other techniques such as NCI as shown in pyrethroids may be required to eliminate matrix interferences
- how to keep in mind that your matrix needs some study for optimized MRM transitions and/or ionization techniques for best results.
About the presenter
Ed George worked for 15 years in the environmental laboratory industry, holding positions of Lab Technician (2 yrs), Lab Manager (10 yrs), and R&D Manager (3 yrs), responsible for developing novel sample preparation and analysis methods for water by GC/MS and LC/MS. He participated in several collaborative method development projects with the USEPA. From 2005-2009, he worked for Varian, Inc. as Application Lab Manager, developing applications for pesticide residues in food on ion trap and triple quadrupole GC/MS/MS and LC/MS/MS systems. He is currently the Single Quadrupole Product Manager and GC/MS Applications Specialist at Bruker.
