EPA Method 537.1 is a solid-phase extraction (SPE) liquid chromatography/tandem mass spectrometry (LC/MS/MS) method for the determination of selected per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) in drinking water that was released in November 2018 as a revision to EPA Method 537 (released in November 2009). It was updated to incorporate the replacement PFAS introduced into the market after perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) were phased out in the US market. This method allows laboratories to assess the occurrence of these new chemicals together with the 14 original targets in drinking water.
Shimadzu offers an essential handbook of procedures for EPA Method 537.1, together with two application notes that demonstrate the use of its Ultra-Fast Mass Spectrometry (UFMS™) and LCMS-8045 to ensure that quality assurance and control requirements are met.

Handbook of Analysis Procedures for EPA Method 537.1
This handbook breaks down the analysis procedures step-by-step for fulfilling QC requirements necessary to validate EPA method 537.1. The handbook starts with steps to undergo the initial demonstration of capability and then covers the steps needed to validate the sample analysis.
Analysis of Per-and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) Specified in EPA M537.1 Using the Triple Quadrupole LCMS-8045
This application note demonstrates that analysis for all analytes listed in EPA 537.1 (Determination of Selected Per- and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances in Drinking Water by Solid Phase Extraction and LC-MS/MS) can be performed on the LCMS-8045, meeting the quality assurance and quality control criteria specified in the method.
Analysis of PFAS Specified in EPA Method 537 and Beyond using Shimadzu UFMS
This application note demonstrates the use, performance, and compatibility of Shimadzu’s UFMS (Ultra-Fast Mass Spectrometry) for EPA Method 537 with an expanded compound panel of seven additional PFAS. A total of 27 PFAS compounds are extracted, separated, and detected with our LC-MS/MS models.
