Learn about Chiral Separations Introduction & Protein Columns in this comprehensive course in the systematic development of liquid chromatography separations using QbD principles

A comprehensive course in the systematic development of liquid chromatography separations using QbD principles. Chiral separations are necessary when the sample contains enantiomeric compounds that have “handedness” – that is, they are exactly the same compound with a different arrangement of the same functional groups around a chiral centre.

This course is designed for practical workers in the laboratory who have responsibility for designing new HPLC or UHPLC methods or transferring methods between laboratories. Experienced workers will get the most out of this class, but because it builds from the fundamentals, anyone with experience in HPLC or UHPLC will gain valuable knowledge.

This course covers:

Chiral separations are necessary when the sample contains enantiomeric compounds that have “handedness” – that is, they are exactly the same compound with a different arrangement of the same functional groups around a chiral center. As a result, they cannot be separated by traditional normal- or reversed-phase systems, but instead need a chiral aspect to the mobile phase or stationary phase. The four main types of chiral columns – protein, cavity, Pirkle, and macrocyclic antiaiotic columns – are briefly described. Suggestions are given on how to develop a method for samples containing chiral compounds.

  • Introduction & Protein Columns
  • Other Chiral Columns

By attending this online training course you get full access to the 38 video modules and approximately 12.5 hours of instruction. You also get handouts containing copies of all of the approximately 520 PowerPoint slides used in the class. These are arranged for easy note-taking while you view each module and give you a valuable resource for future reference.

This module has a complementary quiz. By correctly answering the quiz questions for all of the modules as part of the course you will be able to download your certificate of completion. Types of questions to expect are:

  • What is the separation of chiral compounds?
  • Why are protein columns useful for chiral separations?
  • Describe the protein-based chiral columns?
  • What is effective in controlling retention and selectivity when using protein columns for chiral separations?
  • What is true about cavity-type chiral columns?
  • When can cyclodextrin columns separate enantiomers?
  • What describe Pirkle columns?
  • What is macrocyclic antibiotic columns?
